The varsity and JV scholar bowl teams both walked away with a score of 2-1, defeating Kearney and Lee’s Summit but losing to North Kansas City at the competition on Feb. 8 at Kearney High School. These wins may not have been possible without the foreign exchange students.

The scholar bowl team is short a few players compared to last year, but head scholar bowl coach Melissa Camarda feels they have gained valuable additions to the team this year.

“We had a smaller group this year than last, but we had so many seniors last year,” Camarda said.  “We would love anyone interested in trivia or games or Jeopardy-style play to come try it out next year. We love that this year we had three exchange students join us: Cara Flesche, Zoe Vandooren and Qiuyu Zhao.”

Flesche went back to Germany last semester but junior Danielle Dodd feels senior Qiuyu (Agnes) Zhao from China and senior Zoe Vandooren from Belgium bring many diverse qualities to the table that American students do not.

“Zoe and Agnes are deeply intelligent ladies who have their fair share of knowledge and because they grew up with a different cultural experience, there are things that the Americans on the team have no clue about,” Dodd said. “Basically if the question starts asking about Europe, I just smile knowing that Zoe will do her thing. Agnes is so incredible at math. I cannot believe it.”

While Zhao and Vandooren are assets to the team, the bond that has been created is also an important factor.

“The foreign exchange students have really just made everything more enjoyable for me and the team in general,” Dodd said. “Zoe and Agnes are so good natured and wonderful to be around. I really do enjoy being their friend.”

Based on this year’s gain in foreign exchange students on the scholar bowl team, Camarda hopes it is the start of a tradition.

“They have been an invaluable contribution,” Camarda said. “I hope we have more exchange students in the future. They are always so smart and knowledgeable. We have learned a great deal from them.”
